Homemade Spinach Basil Pizza

Who doesn’t love pizza? You know the kind; hot, saucy, with ooey gooey cheese the stretches for miles when you take that first bite. Now, I may be biased, but I think no other place comes close to New York City pizza (not even the pizza I tried in Italy!) and my family and I have been loyal customers to the same pizza shop in Brooklyn since before I can remember. My mom always cooked dinner during school nights, but Fridays or Saturdays were always pizza night and I definitely looked forward to it. So as I was perusing through different food blogs the other day and growing quite hungry doing so, I was inspired to try making my very own pizza for the first time. I didn’t really know what to expect or how difficult to be, but it wasn’t at all! And I don’t know if I’ll be able to buy pizza from the pizza shop again. I found this really easy recipe for the dough on the blog Crunchy, Creamy, Sweet. All that I needed was flour, water, sugar, and the most important ingredient: yeast. At first, after I combined all of the ingredients, it was a little difficult to work with because the dough was so sticky. But that was easily remedied after I added a little more flour. I also made my own pizza sauce. Here is the recipe I created: Ingredients

  • One can of peeled Roma tomatoes
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2 cups of spinach


  1. Add the olive oil to a sauce pan and allow to heat up
  2. Chop the garlic into small pieces and add to hot oil
  3. Crush the tomatoes in a bowl and add to pan
  4. Add the spinach and allow to cook for about 10 minutesIMG_0920

I didn’t have a pizza pan, but I didn’t let that stop me, and I was able to easily form the pizza on a sheet pan that I already had. I rolled out the dough, added a little drop of olive oil to the sheet pan, and folded over the edges of the dough to form the base and the crust so the sauce wouldn’t spill out. I allowed just the crust and the sauce to cook first for about 15 minutes in the oven because I didn’t want the cheese and the basil to burn:  I pulled the partially baked pizza out of the oven and topped it will mozzarella cheese and torn basil. After it was finished, it really was one of the best pizzas I’d ever had!

IMG_0928 The crust was the awesome balance of crispy and crunchy, the cheese was hot and gooey, the sauce was awesome, and the basil added the perfect final touch. I am so happy with how everything turned out and I will definitely be making my own pizza again. Want a slice?
