Homemade Curly Hair Deep Conditioner

Hot and humid weather can be a curly girl’s worst nightmare, which is why extra precautions to protect these tresses need to be taken. From choosing the right hair products to regular trims, a lot can go into ensuring that you have a healthy mane.

I’ve been reading up on different hair products and experimenting with what works and what doesn’t and I decided to try making my own deep conditioner. This way, I would know exactly what was being put into my hair and be able to fully understand the health benefits of each. Also, I already had all of the ingredients at home, so it was definitely something easy to do and something anyone can try.

You can definitely mix it up and experiment what works best for your own hair type, but the recipe I created goes as follows:

  1. 1/2 an avocado – The oils and the vitamins B & E within avocado help to strengthen hair and promote hair growth
  2. 1 tablespoon honey –  It is an emollient, meaning it naturally softens and moisturizes hair. It also has antiseptic properties that help protect the scalp
  3. 1 tablespoon mayo – The protein within mayo helps to create strong, shiny hair
  4. 1 tablespoon organic coconut oil  – It helps to prevent hair breakage, moisturizes, and is rich in essential vitamins such as E & K

After mixing up all of the ingredients, it looked and smelled more like the guacamole from hell, but I knew that my hair would thank me for it later. I slathered the concoction on and covered my head for about 45 minutes with a plastic bag (you didn’t think I’d ruin my good shower cap with this stuff now did you?) and couldn’t wait to see how my hair turned out.

I jumped into the shower to wash it all out, (which left my bathwater looking like Shrek had just stepped out of it) but did not use any shampoo because I wanted to leave in some of the nutrients from the deep conditioner. I styled it my usual way and let it air dry and was excited to see if my hair looked and felt any different.

Here is the final result:

IMG_0585I really could see and feel a difference in my hair after my hair was completely dry! It definitely felt healthier and was a lot more shiny than before. Although I didn’t care too much for the slight mayo smell left behind, I know that my hair has definitely benefited from this deep conditioning. Please feel free share your own experiences and recipes for getting shiny, healthy hair.  Thanks for reading!
