Thriller Skate Night

” ‘Cause this is Thriller!! Thriller night!”

I cannot even begin to stress how much I love Michael Jackson. From his music to  his kind heart, I simply find who he is/was so endearing, so when I heard that there was a Thriller-themed Halloween skate party taking place in Prospect Park a few weeks I knew I had to be there.

I have been a Michael Jackson fan for as long as I can remember. His music was always played in the house and some of my earliest memories are of being glued to the TV watching his unbelievable short films like “Scream” or “Remember the Time.” I even dressed as his female co-star in the Thriller short film, for Halloween a few years ago.

Halloween 5 Years Ago!

Roller skating has seen a hiatus in New York City ever since about 2007 when Brooklyn’s last rink, The Empire Roller Skating Center, closed its doors amidst rising crime rates, including shootings. However, last year Prospect Park opened up its newly renovated LeFrak Center at Lakeside which boasts a 16,000 sq. ft. covered rink overlooking Prospect Park Lake that offers roller skating during the warm seasons and ice skating during the cold (the ice skating rink reopened last Saturday).

Every Friday night, starting back in July, Lola Star’s Dreamland Roller Disco found its way to the Prospect Park roller skating rink. With totally tubular 80s themed parties like Pretty in Pink and Material Girl, we definitely had rad time that night.

They played all of Michael Jackson’s top hits, including songs off of his latest album Xscape. The rink was also super smooth (unlike the last rink I tried at Brooklyn Bridge Park), and really allowed you to pick up speed, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your skill level.

It was so cool to see people all dressed up like zombies or Michael Jackson and having a great time skating and dancing. I’m not the best skater ever, but I know how to not fall haha, so it was sometimes a task avoiding those who fell down. I still have to work on stopping without first crashing into the wall, but I’ll definitely be prepared for next season!

If you’re in Brooklyn and love to roller skate, I definitely recommend checking one of these parties out the next time they roll around (yes, pun intended). They really are so much fun and have brought back a seemingly lost pastime.

Oh yeah! And they even had a professional photographer there to take photos while people skated or in front of a backdrop all for free. Here are some of my favorites from that night:
